South Indian healthy lunch recipe - Raagi Sankati

While western countries depends mostly on vegetables to stay healthy, Indians go for items made with food grains. Raagi (Eleusine Coracana) which is also called as African finger millet, is one of the main food grain in South India. Raagi Sankati is a food recipe which uses Raagi as the main ingredient.

Unlike western people, Indian like to have heavy meals. In this scenario, Raagi Sankati serves the best compared to vegetables and fruits. Here are few benefits of Raagi,

  • It is a heavy food and hence one won't feel hungry atleast for 4 hours, depending on how much he/she consumed.
  • Raagi is rich in Iron and Calcium. Hence, in few parts of South India, Raagi is considered as the best food for kids and women.
  • Fat content is quite less and hence it is best food for Indians who are looking to reduce weight without compromising on the heavy meals.
  • 100 gms of Raagi contains, 72.6 gms of Carbohydrates, 7.7 gms of Proteins, 3.6 gms of Fibre and 1.3 gms of Fat.
  • Raagi is a cooling agent and hence it reduces body temperature.

Raagi Sankati is one of the food item which can be made using Raagi. This recipe is quite simple and can be made in less time. Here are the ingredients you need to have,

Ingredients:


Rice 1 Cup
Water 4 Cups
Raagi (In Powder Form) 1 Cup
Ghee 1 Tea Spoon (Optional)
Salt As per your specification



Procedure:

  1. Take 1 Cup of rice and boil it in 4 Cups of water.
  2. Add salt as per your specification.
  3. After 10 - 15 minutes, add Raagi powder to this boiling rice.
  4. Don't stir the mixture for the first few minutes. Later, we can start stirring.
  5. Stir it till the Raagi mixes with rice completely. In few minutes, you will observe that the water is no more there in the vessel. 
  6. This means that the cooking of Raagi Sankati was done. You can take it out and can roll it like a sphere. 
  7. Raagi (In Powder Form)
  8. You can serve it directly or can prepare a gravy vegetarian or non-vegetarian dish on side of Raagi Sankati. 
This is one of the best nutritious low fat food, which cools the body apart from reducing the weight. For South Indians, this is the best food for weight reduction.
